Mpumalanga, which is Zulu for "the place where the sun rises", is a province in South Africa near the southern part of Kruger National Park. We visited Mpumalanga after our Safari inside Kruger, and even though we only spent a few days there, we had such a relaxing time. To be honest the weather ruined a lot of our plans, but if anything, this just gives us an excuse to go back and see everything properly!

Where To Stay

We stayed at Summerfields Rose Retreat & Spa. The rooms were essentially a luxury treehouse which was really cool because we both had never stayed in an accommodation like that before! Our room was a tent with air conditioning, heat lamps, an outdoor bathtub, and it overlooked a river below. There was a restaurant on the property where we ate all of our meals as well as a gin bar where we had the best time tasting all the different kinds of gin! Summerfields also had a lot of different spa treatments available and seemed like the kind of place you would definitely go to relax. It was right in the middle of our South Africa trip so it was a perfect time to chill out for a bit.

Best Things to Do

  • Blyde River Canyon (which is the 3rd biggest canyon in the world!)

  • Bourke’s Luck Potholes

  • Lisbon Falls

  • Berlin Falls

  • God’s Window

Sadly, we didn’t to see a lot of the attractions in Mpumalanga properly because there was insane fog the 2 days we were there! We went to Blyde River Canyon but didn’t get to see the epic lookout point, and we tried to go to God’s Window but we had to turn around because of the fog! But from what we did see, everything looked gorgeous. We definitely need to come back and see these sights for all their glory. Mpumalanga is a short trip from or to Kruger National Park and we think it’s definitely worth a visit!

Thanks so much to Ntsako Travel Africa for inviting us on this trip!
