When we booked our trip to Australia, we knew wanted at least a few days to explore Byron Bay! We had heard so much about this place, and we could tell it was going to be a place that we loved. Byron is a short flight from Sydney, and the vibes there are immaculate. It’s the cutest beach town with some of the best surfing and beaches in the world. Even though we got unlucky with the weather (it rained almost the whole time we were there lol), we still had the most amazing time in Byron Bay. We spent 2 days there and even with the rain, we felt like we saw a lot! You could spend longer if you wanted to have more relaxing beach days, but 2 days is definitely enough to see a good chunk of the area.

How to Get to Byron Bay

Byron is located at the very northern tip of New South Wales — a short 30 minute drive and you will be in Queensland! We were already in Sydney so we hopped on the 1 hour flight from Sydney to Byron. We took a Uber from the Ballina airport to our hotel, but our Uber driver told us that there are not many Ubers in Byron so you might have to wait a while for one (we waited about 25 minutes). There is also a bus that goes to the center of Byron from the airport. You can also rent a car (just remember they drive on the left in Australia lol)! Campers/camper vans are really popular in Byron so parking isn’t really an issue. We were only there for 2 days so we didn’t think renting a car was necessary but it’s deff a good option if you are staying a little longer.

We stayed at The Lord Byron and it was one of our favorite hotels ever! The room was boho-chic and the amenities at the property were amazing. There was a tennis court in the back, free bikes you could use to ride around Byron for the day, and free surf boards you could use at the beach! There was a gorgeous pool and a hot tub in the back as well. We walked everywhere from The Lord Byron and we would 1000% recommend staying here.

Best Things to do in Byron Bay

Cape Byron Lighthouse

Main Beach

  • Check out the Cape Byron Lighthouse - it was about a 2 hour walk from our hotel, but it was such an amazing route! It did get steep towards the end, but it was one of the most beautiful walks along the coastline where you pass the most eastern point of continental Australia! You can also stop at some beaches on the way (if it’s not raining like it was for us lol). If you are renting a car you can also drive to the lighthouse as well.

  • Watch the surfers at the beach - there are many beaches you can visit in Byron, but our favs were Main Beach (at the end of the main strip in Byron Bay aka the closest beach to most accommodations), Wategos, The Pass, and Tallow Beach. You will see surfers everywhere, but I think we saw the most at The Pass.

  • Explore the town of Byron Bay - there are only a few streets so you can’t get lost, but the town is so cute! There are tons of surf shops, restaurants, cafes, and bars you can go to. All roads lead to Main Beach so once you are there you’ve reached the end.

  • Catch some live music on the streets - You will probably see a few live performances on the streets! They are all over but we noticed the most at night and on the weekend. Everyone sits/stands around and watches and it really makes you feel like a local!

  • There are lots of activities ti do in Byron like surf lessons, kayaking, paddle boarding, & more, but we didn’t get a chance to do any since it was raining the entire time we were there. If you have better weather we definitely recommend doing one of those!
